Abstract

This volume contains multiple field books by multiple creators. Volume 56 documents work completed by C. Douglas Hackman and Harington for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program during 1964-1968. All journals relate details about preparations, travel aboard vessels, daily activities, participant work, collecting specimens, vegetation and bird populations on islands visited. 1) C. Hackman's journal and species accounts for Southern Island Cruise [SIC] #4, February-March 1964. Includes dated, timed itinerary. Journal has dated entries, headed with location. Details preparations for departure and work aboard the USS Hitchiti from Honolulu; data about quantities of birds, eggs, and nests; includes hand drawn map with notes; bird banding; and weather during voyage. Includes summary of bird observations (by species and dates) organized by island. Locations includes islands of Howland, Baker, KcKean, Hull [Orona], Birnie, Enderbury, Canton, Pago Pago, Falaofo, Nukunon, Jarvis, Christmas [Kiritimati], and Palmyra,2) appears to be a portion of a handwritten journal and species account by C. Hackman for Feburary 26 -March 5,1965 for the Fakaofo Atoll and Nukunono Atoll of the Tokelau Islands. These are dated journal style entries with extensive notes about terrain and vegetation (including sketches). 3) Is an insect catalog for ATF #7 during February to March 1965 recorded by C. Hackman. Data includes number, date, additional assigned code, species, quantity, and island. 3) is the journal, species accounts, and catalog of C. Hackman from the Southern Island Cruise of June 14 - July 13, 1968. It is handwritten. Entries are headed with date and island and include descriptions of island lagoons. Includes several maps with bird populations noted. Includes sketch and notes on fish. Additional locations visited include Malden, Starbuck, American Samoa. 4) is C. Hackman's journal and species account for the cruise to the Leeward Islands and Kure and Midway Islands, March to April 1967. Begins with a dated and timed itinerary. Dated journal style entries include lists of observed plants, and notes about bird songs. Includes maps with notes. Locations include Laysan, French Frigate Shoals, Nihoa, Necher, Pearl and Hermes Reef. 5) is Brian Harrington's journal, species accounts, and catalog for Southern Isand Cruise [SIC] #9, September 16 - October 1965 aboard the USNS Shearwater. Additional locations include Phoenix (Rawaki]. Species list is headed by Island. Catalog includes several assigned numbers, measurements, collection method, sex, type, and descriptions of addition internal characteristics.
