Abstract

This volume contains multiple field books by Roger Clapp for work completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, August 26, 1967 to April 1968. The journals include a variety of formats and types of information. Entries begin with date and location (specifying island), and include journal style entries describing daily activities; itineraries; bird population estimations; marked maps; image lists (photograph and slide) with shot number, photographer, date, location and description; as well as observation data with descriptions of environment, colonies and individual birds across a range of ages, their nests and eggs, and other observed fauna (geckos. Data recorded includes observations by location with types of birds (listed by common name), their quantities, and limited descriptive information per type bird, and descriptions of environment by defining area with geographical and commercial landmarks; bird banding and return data listing types of birds with their age, sex, quantity, and nesting information (sometimes with band number); molting data; and egg measurements. 1) First first covers data from SIC 14 1966, and field work from August to September 1967. Locations include Midway Islands, Hawaiian Islands, Lisianski, Laysan, Hermes, and Pearl Island. 2) Covers fieldwork form March to April 1968, and is titled Journal and Species Accounts Leeward and Main Hawaiian Islands for LS #22. Covers same locations as 1 in addition to French Frigate Shoals, Tern Island, Kure Atoll.
