Abstract

This field book documents Nelson's field work from Saint Michael to Icy Cape (in the North Slope region) in Alaska between 8 and 24 July 1881. During this time, Nelson was on general assignment to study the zoology of Alaska, as well as geology, meteorology, and ethnology. This notebook contains mostly notes on traveling and ethnological, but also natural history observations. Natural history observations describe of flora and fauna, particularly birds, of the regions Nelson travels through. Weather conditions were recorded along with temperatures. This note book also contains several sketches of land masses, villages, and ethnological specimen.
