Abstract

This field book documents Nelson's field work near St. Michael and the Yukon area (including Anvik) in Alaska between 6 October and 6 December 1880. During this time, Nelson was on general assignment to study the zoology of Alaska, as well as geology, meteorology, and ethnology. This notebook contains mostly ethnological and some natural history observations. Natural history observations are primarily descriptions of geology, flora that grow in the various locations Nelson travels, as well as birds, small mammals, and invertebrates such as mussels, crustaceans and squirts observed along his journey. Weather conditions were recorded along with temperatures. A sketched map and other sketches are included. Nelson's ethnological observations include notes on customs, song, dance, mythology, and language.
