Abstract

This field book documents Nelson's activities in Alaska between 4 December 1878 to 27 January 1879. During this time, Nelson was on general assignment in Alaska to study the zoology of the area as well as meteorology, geography, and ethnology. This field book contains mostly ethnological observations but also includes some natural history observations of birds and other animals. His daily narrative notes also include descriptions of weather conditions. Locations include Saint Michael, Redoubt Volcano, the Yukon area, and possibly other locations. Some detached pages and a hand drawn map of Alaska from Nunivak Island to perhaps as far north as Stebbins, and perhaps as far east as Tuluksak are also included.
