Abstract

The color slides document the work of Waldo L. Schmitt during the United States Navy Galapagos Expedition, 1941-1942. Slide labels include date, location, and description of scene; sometimes include time of day or name of person photographed. Images document travel enroute; monuments visited; coastlines and beaches; bodies of water; vegetation and terrain of islands; types of crabs, birds, and reptiles; botanical gardens and museums in Balboa and Panama City, Panama; participants at work on land and aboard ship; and a salt crater. Locations in Ecuador and Panama include the vicinity of Academy Bay [Bahía Academia]; Indefatigable island [Isla Santa Cruz]; Villamil; and James Island [Isla San Salvador].
