Abstract

The unpublished manuscript by Waldo LaSalle Schmitt documents the work completed during the Smithsonian-Bredin Society Islands Expedition, 1957. Discusses members of the expedition and their backgrounds, the earthquake in San Francisco, California in 1957, distances traveled and details about locations visited. The manuscript is organized chronologically. Details collecting activities with descriptions of locations and specimens gathered, local food eaten, descriptions of the crew and participants, annual dance festival, and spiny lobsters as food and specimens. Includes multiple locations through out French Polynesia Society Islands [Îles de la Société] and Tuamotu Islands including Huahine, Raiatea, Makatea, Bora-Bora, and Tahiti.
