Abstract

The correspondence documents Waldo Schmitt's work with the Smithsonian-Bredin Society Islands Expedition, 1957. Letters describe progress reports to J. Bruce Bredin, detailing destinations, collecting activities, dredging, and fish collecting (fish poisoning to obtain selection of fauna common to specific reefs), descriptions of shoreline terrain per island, observed wildlife. These include dates. Other correspondence relates to travel arrangements, vessel used, and staffing. Includes correspondence of J. Bruce Bredin, Leonard Carmichael, James McConnaughey, and John E. Randall. Locations are numerous and through out the Socieyt islands [Îles de la Société] of Frnech Polynesia.
