Abstract

The folder of correspondence is A through B that documents the work of Waldo Schmitt during the Smithsonian-Bredin Belgian Congo Expedition, 1955. Includes official correspondence for purposes of travel, letters formalizing the itinerary, accommodations, issues with shot film being received at the Smithsonian, issues with Congo government officials, information about a film made during the expedition, and funding. There is a series of letters to the Bredins that are progress reports. They list location at the top of the page, and include detailed descriptions of terrain, people met, communities visited, daily activities, weather, and wildlife observed. Includes correspondence of J. Bruce Bredin. Locations include the vicinity of Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo (Stanleyville [Kisangani], Leopoldville [Kinshasa], Yangambi,and Nia-Nia).
