Abstract

The diary documents Waldo Schmitt's work during the Smithsonian-Bredin Belgian Congo Expedition, 1955. Entries cover March 26 - June 17, 1955. Includes information about travel through Europe on way to Africa. Entries are dated. Subject matter includes travel information, personal observations, interactions with acquaintances and colleagues during travel, descriptions of terrain and vegetation along route in Africa to Congo; participants and supplies; accommodations; photographs taken; names of scientists traveling with and their specialties; visits to coffee plantation; shrimp hunting; sometimes kilometers traveled during collecting; weather; and types and quantities of specimens. Includes sketches. Locations in Democratic Republic of the Congo include the vicinity of Stanleyville [Kisangani], Gada stream, Rwindi, and Wegania.
