This item is part 2 of the 4 part, unbound logbook for Vema cruise 21 from February 1965 to December 1965. Part 2 covers the cruise information from April 5 to June 29, 1965. Summary of route: during this portion of Vema 21, the cruise begins at 23° 47'S, 140° 26'W in the South Pacific Ocean. They continue west, then north near Honolulu, HI, then further west across the North Pacific Ocean, passed Japan and into the Philippine Sea, ending at 23° 06'n, 134° 26'e. This item mostly consists of detailed logs recording information about hauls at various stations. Detailed logs record the following types of information: Ship and cruise number, station number, sample number, coordinates, total number of samples, date, median local time, type of tow, sample type, commence sampling, terminate sampling, length of tow, wire angle at max. depth, flowmeter reading, corrected depth range, flowmeter number, displacement vol., flowmeter calib. factor, corrected displ., vol., Vol. H20 filtered, sky conditions, sea conditions, surface water temperature, Bt slide no., BT serial no., BT temperatures (on reverse side of sheet), Nansen hydro sta. number, no. samples, max. depth, surface salinity, core no., secchi disk, comments, successful haul? (yes or no), if not successful, what was wrong?, observer name. Some detailed logs are accompanied by sheets entitled "Lamont multiple opening-and-closing plankton tows", which record the following information: action, time, calc. depth, wire rate, wire angle, wire out, depth upper, depth middle, depth lower, depth, total time, meter reading, meter factor, mater number, vol. filtered, label no., remarks. The back (verso) of the detailed log sheets records BT slide no., depth, temperature, salinity in a table. Some detailed logs sheets include time-depth recorders (made by Benthos, Inc), which are approximately 3 inches in diameter. Each of these has a date, time, coordinates, ship name, recorder number, (and a place to record calibration).
