Abstract

The diary documents Waldo Schmitt's work during the Hancock South America Expedition, 1939. It covers the dates March 16 - May 6, 1939. Entries are dated and journal style. Travel and daily activities are recorded from his departure from New York. Locations are sometimes listed at the beginning of entries. Subject matter discusses interactions and meetings with colleagues, their family members, and expedition participants; daily expenses and activities; collecting locations; details about crew; descriptions of terrain and vegetation of destinations; interactions with local inhabitants while working in the field; and notes in the back of the notebook. locations visited include the vicinity of Panama (Caledonia Bay), Colombia (including Puerto Colombia and Magdalena River), and Trinidad.
