Abstract

The diary, made up of loose pages and a bound volume with news clippings, documents Waldo Schmitt's work during the Presidential Cruise of 1938. The dates cover July 14 - August 11, 1938. Entries are dated and journal style. Sometimes location is listed at the top of the entry. Subject matter includes locations visited; activities aboard ship; collecting sites and types of specimens (fish, crustaceans, birds) sometimes with times of day; anchorage locations; daily activities; wildlife observed, including birds; interactions with colleagues; and activities of the president. The bound volume includes dated entries, and mostly describing collecting activities. Locations include the vicinity of Magdalena Bay [Bahía Magdalena], Socorro Island [Isla Socorro], Mexico; and Galapagos Islands [Archipiélago de Colón]; Clipperton Island; Costa Rice; and Old Providence Island [Isla de Providencia].
