Abstract

Charles D. Walcott compiles notes on sites across the state of New York from 1886 to 1891, detailing characteristics of the deposits of limestone, sandstone, shale, and fossils observed in the Cambrian strata. Each set of notes gives details descriptions of an area, usually near a body of water, discussing vegetation, erosion, type and quality of sand, along with implications of observations. Most sets of notes include sketches detailing the strata of the site. They also refer to specimens, photographs of the sites, and latitude and longitude positions. At the end of some note sets, he lists the types of fossils observed. Locations include the vicinity of Potsdam, Essex County, Rensselaer County, Washington County, Fort Ann, Port Henry, Whitehall, and North Granville.
