Abstract

The first volume of the diary documents Waldo Schmitt's work during the Hancock Pacific-Galapagos Expedition, 1935. Covers dates November 23, 1934 - January 14, 1935. Entries are dated. Begins with an index of station data that includes station number, dates, latitude and longitude positions, water temperature, and air temperature. Entries detail travel, interactions with colleagues, descriptions of incidents aboard ship, observations and descriptions of expedition participants and accompanying spouses, collecting efforts (dredging) and locations, descriptions of collecting site environments, observed salinity of locations, wildlife including pelagic birds observed, holiday celebrations, and song lyrics. Locations include the vicinity of Ecuador -- Galapagos Islands [Archipiélago de Colón], Falkands Islands, Guayaquil, Callao, and Quito.
