Abstract

This volume contains handwritten copies Brewer's field notes borrowed from the Gray Herbarium. The notes document Brewer's botanical collection and observation efforts throughout California, beginning on November 25, 1860 in the vicinity of San Luis Obispo and ending on September 9, 1862 in an upland swam in the vicinity of the Upper Sacramento River Ferry near Shasta. Other localities include: Santa Barbara, Sierra Santa Monica, San Gabriel Mountains, Sonoma county, Napa county, Marin county, Mount Diablo, Santa Susana Mountains, Los Angeles, "Mountains N. of Santa Cruz",and "Hills W. of Orestimbra Cañon". Specimen no. 1-1358 are represented in the book. Data typically include scientific name, locality, elevation, date of collection, and often contains narrative description of growing conditions. Brewer sometimes notes radius and age of specimen.
