Abstract

Black-and-white photographs document Waldo Schmitt's work in the Juan Fernández Islands during the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship Expeditions to the East and West Coasts of South America, 1925-1927. Some images have numbers or descriptions recorded on the reserve side. Subject matter includes images from aboard ship; coast line of the islands; pebble beaches; vessels in port; Robinson Crusoe reenactments for visitors; portraits of Waldo Schmitt; candid images of local inhabitants; portrait of Rene Durand; panorama of hillsides; vistas and detail images of vegetation; reproductions of engravings of the island. Some descriptions indicate that images were used in a National Geographic publication. Photographs come from several sources including Camden S. McLain. Some photographs were used in publication.
