Abstract

This item is comprised of a journal kept by Bailey during a trip to the Mojave Desert, California, October 20-December 15, 1926. Corresponding specimen lists can be found in Box 4 Folder 5 of the same collection. The item also contains a newspaper clipping with a photograph of a toddler riding a tortoise,a handwritten quotation from "The Gallapagos Tortoises by John Van Deuburg", and several index cards with data on Xerobates agassizii (desert tortoise) specimens observed in Hodge, California. Bailey's October 25 entry contains a detailed description of the collection of a male Xerobates agassizii specimen which Bailey estimates to be around 16 years old. Bailey's entry from November 8 contains a detailed description of his collection, observation and interaction with a male Vulpes macrotis (kit fox) specimen which eventually escaped from its cage.
