Abstract

This item is part 1 of a two part, unbound logbook for Vema 19. It contains information about Vema cruise 19 from February 22 to December 8, 1963, although only detail cruise logs up until August 31, 1963 are contained in this item. This item includes summary logs (including flowmeter logs), detailed logs, and bathythermograph observations. Summary of route: the cruise began at 38° 18'N, 72° 50'W off the coast of Delaware. The cruise sails south through the North Atlantic and west into the North Pacific Ocean. They continue south and west across the South Pacific Ocean into Polynesia. They then continue west and head north into the Philippine Sea, then into the South China Sea, then heading south and west between the South East Asian mainland and Malaysia into the Indian Ocean. They travel northwest into the Laccadive Sea and Arabian Sea, then sail southwest back into the Indian Ocean along the east coast of Africa ending at 13° 08'S, 44° 09'E north of the Mozambique Channel. Summary log from February 22 to December 8, 1963 recording the following information: cruise no., date, time, coordinates, and temperature. Flowmeter logs from February 22, 1963 recording the following information: station, type of tow, reading (revs.), length (min.), Revs/min., wind force, sea cond., vol. H20 filtered, and remarks. The detailed logs are from February 22 to August 31, 1963 and include the following information: cruise number, station number, date, type, 1M net in, out, 1M meter reading, 1/2M net in, out, 1/2M meter reading, coordinates, median local time, 1M length tow, 1/2M length tow, wire angle at depth, corrected depth, corrected depth, 1M displ. vol., 1/2M displ. vol., corrected displ. vol., vol. H20 filt. 1M, vol. H20 filt. 1/2M, comments (whether or not the haul was successful), net clogged, net tears, No. bottles used, surface temp. (occasionally), and observer. The back side of the detailed log form (verso) has typed information and records depth in feet and meters, temperature, and salinity. "Bathythermograph observations" from July to September 1963 which record the following information: slide no., BT no., day, time, coordinates, distance from last observation, sounding in fathoms, barometer in inches, wea., sea, wind, surface temp, wet B. temp, dry B. temp., clouds, BT depth in feet, notes. Also includes a circular charts approximately 3 inches in diameter. Each of these charts has a date, time, coordinates, ship name, recorder number, (and a place to record calibration). These charts were made by Bathos, Inc.
