Abstract

The black-and-white photographs document Waldo Schmitt's work during the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship Expeditions to the East and West Coasts of South America, 1925-1927. Photographs are usually numbered, and have descriptions, dates, and notes on the reverse sides. Photographs include images of ports and vessels, structures and streets in town, candid images of local inhabitants, fish vendors, the museum in Rio de Janeiro and related garden, accommodations, vegetation of shorelines (some detail images), rural landscapes, group portraits, and skylines. Box 80 folder 12 is a notebook listing photographs by number, sometimes with more descriptive information. Locations include the vicinity of Ilha de Paquetá and Cabo Frio in Brazil.
