Abstract

This one field journal has 4 copies: a handwritten German version, a handwritten English translation, a typescript in English prepared from the handwritten English translation, and an edited version of the typescript. It seems none of these is the original. In addition, the translations cover the period from June 18 to October 24, 1853, while the German version contains no entries later than October 11, 1853. The journal describes Kreutzfeldts trip possibly in Kansas, New Mexico, Arkansas, the Great Basin, and possibly Colorado during Captain John W. Gunnison's 38th parallel expedition, 1853. His entries are very detailed and include weather information, observations of surrounding flora and fauna, and some specimen numbers. Although Kreutzfeldt collects mostly plant specimens during this trip, he also documents capturing some reptile specimens.
