Abstract

This unbound item contains a detailed log book for Vema cruise 16 date from October 04, 1959 to July 30, 1960. During this cruise they circumnavigate the globe. Starting off the coast of New Jersey at 39-40.5N, 72-19W, they sail south through the North and South Atlantic Ocean. They move east through the Indian Ocean, into the Great Australian Bight, and then continue east entering into the South Pacific Ocean. The journey east continues through the Drake Passage into the South Atlantic Ocean, and then north along the east coast of South America into the North Atlantic, ending north of the starting point near Nova Scotia. Between detailed logs for May 24 and May 25 is a fold out map measuring roughly 51cm x 42cm. This map is entitled "Vema 16 : station chart #2 with general track, leg : Bermuda to San Juan, P.R.". The furthest point south west depicted is roughly 15N, 75W and the furthest point north east is 35N, 62W. The detailed log includes the following information: cruise number, station number, date, type, 1M net in, out, 1M meter reading, 1/2M net in, out, 1/2M meter reading, coordinates, median local time, 1M length tow, 1/2M length tow, wire angle at depth, corrected depth, corrected depth, 1M displ. vol., 1/2M displ. vol., corrected displ. vol., vol. H20 filt. 1M, vol. H20 filt. 1/2M, comments (whether or not the haul was successful), net clogged, net tears, No. bottles used, surface temp. (occasionally), and observer.
