Abstract

This diary documents Bailey's fieldwork in California, March 1-May 4, 1934, and in Virginia, April 5-7, 1935. It also includes miscellaneous notes kept by Bailey, May 4-December 15, 1934, as well as comments on the death of Edward William Nelson. The field notes from southern California document Bailey's efforts to engineer more humane leg hold traps for coyotes, bobcats, and opossums, after his retirement from the Bureau of Biological Survey. There are drawings of springs and discussion of different types of wire and other materials, and also information about manufacturing by American Chain in York, Pennsylvania. Bailey also discusses advice on engineering ideas and patents given to him by Fred K. Vreeland. Localities in California include San Marcos, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Localities in Virginia are in the vicinity of "Camp Lee" (now known as Fort Lee).
