Abstract

The diary of 1940 includes Waldo Schmitt's notes made on the Alaska King Crab Investigation, 1940 in the waters of Alaska. The notebook includes preprinted dates are often remarked. Some entries extend past the one page. Details included vary, but includes two types of entries. First is more narrative in structure and is a combination of personal observations of people interacted with and their families, remarks about best times to conduct research in Alaska, requests from colleagues, and expenses. Other entries include short but detailed entries about daily activities including time of day, stating sailing directions, temperatures, anchorage locations, speeds, barometric readings, when collecting occurred. Additionally, some detail specimen collecting including quantity, types listed by scientific name, and conditions of collecting event.
