This field book documents Hubbard's trip to Montserrat from 17 February to 25 April 1894 to examine and exterminate insect pests affecting lime trees. Included in the notes is a brief newspaper clipping regarding Hubbard's trip. Hubbard's first entry explains the purpose of his trip to Montserrat as well as how he came to be appointed. During this trip, Hubbard conducts lab and field experiments to develop an effective pesticide. During this trip, Hubbard also explores the island and its insect life. Hubbard's notes are narrative, documenting his daily events, and contain detailed descriptions of his surroundings, especially when collecting insects. Insects examined and collected include Diptera, Lepidoptera, scales (Coccoidea, in the order Hemiptera), and possibly other insects. Hubbard was accompanied by Charles V. Riley during this trip.
