Abstract

The papers are a report written by C.B.R. Kennerly entitled "Report to Lt. Parke of an Expedition to Orcas Island performed in December 1857" detailing observations during the Northwest Boundary Survey, 1857-1861. The report details activities with Survey participants, locations of camps, adverse weather. The body of the report is organized as a summary of geography, natural history, and agricultural resources of Orcas Island. Includes description of terrain (including distances), good harbors, vegetation found (including names of specific kinds of trees), types of wildlife observed (listed by scientific name), some mention of specimens collected (mentions in letter that these were collected in mind of the geography in which they were found), and appropriateness for farming.
