Abstract

This field book documents field research and experiments Hubbard conducted in Florida (probably Crescent City, as this notebook is a continuation from "Florida diary, 1880-1881") between 25 September 1881 and 15 July 1882. Notes from 3 and 7 September included at the end. During this trip, Hubbard collects insect pests causing damage to orange trees, cotton, and possibly other crops. He describes these insects in his notes, sometimes including sketches, referring to their specimen numbers, and describing what part of the plan the insect was found and the damage the insect caused. Hubbard also conducts a series of field experiments, applying several different versions of an emulsified solution to crops to test their effectiveness as a pesticide. The ingredients for the solutions are included. Insects collected include but may not be limited to Diptera, Lepidoptera, and scales (Coccoidea). Hubbard was accompanied by Charles V. Riley during this trip.
