Abstract

The notebook titled "Natural History, Northwest Boundary Survey, Birds I" documents Caleb Kennerly's observations of birds during 1857-1859 in and around Washington and Puget Sound. Entries are listed by specimen number, name of bird, and include location date, and measurements. In some cases entries include further detail. These vary, but include a combination of description of appearance (sometimes extensive descriptions of colors), actions observed, surrounding environment, remarks about related specimens, and how commonly observed in an area (including names of locations). Some of these narrative entries can be a half to a full page in length. Locations mentioned around Washington include Camp Chiloweyuck, Barclay's Sound, Port Townsend, Steilacoom, and Semiahmoo Bay.
