Description

Bird section, Bird and Mammals Lab, Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of the Interior field notes consists of 21 field books created by employees of the Fish and Wildlife Service between 1890 and 1964. In 2012, these field books were removed from the USGS library within the Division of Birds and integrated into the Division of Birds archive room and library. Most of the items within this collection are library bound volumes that combine multiple sets of notes from multiple collectors. All items use a similar format in which the collector records a field / collector number, sex and age of specimen, locality, date, genera or binomial of specimen, and remarks. Remarks might include any of the following elements: measurements, stomach content data, notes on reproductive organs, notes on habitat, specific locality information, altitudes / elevations, notes on how common or rare the specimen is, physical descriptions, and other details. These notes reflect collecting trips conducted in various parts of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Greenland. Not all the collectors whose notes are reflected in this collection are included in the list of collectors in this record. Collectors also include Bailey, Alfred Marshall; Bond, Gorman M.; Dufresne, Frank; Gaut, James H.; Goldman, Luther J.; Gutsell, James Sguier; Hall, Eugene Raymond; Hanna, Marcus Albert; Hanna, G.
