Description

This collection contains 4 field books by Sidney Fay Blake, originally maintained by the Division of Birds. These books are four volumes which comprise Blake's bird, egg, and nest collecting and observations from 1906-1959. The notebooks are generally organized by species, often with multiple dated entries under each species heading. Entries may include locality, sex, measurements, time of day, situation, and other general observations. Birds are usually observed but some specimens are collected, with collection numbers present. Species headings are numbered 1-768 and localities present include but are not limited to Texas, California, Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, Florida, Massachusetts, England, France, and Italy. There are additional miscellaneous notes, mammal and bird collection lists, lists of dates when birds were first seen, and foreign species lists. There are also some newspaper clippings and correspondence.
