Description

The Smithsonian Institution Archives collection, "Correspondence, 1937-2005", SIA Acc. 07-194, consists of files created and maintained by Frederick M. Bayer, Zoologist Emeritus. This collection record describes only the items in 07-194 that are field notes or field research related content, which dates from 1939-1973. For information on the correspondence, subject files, and other materials within this collection, please see the SIA finding aid provided under the "Related Materials" section of this record. Many of these materials are related to marine biology and note or depict fish and various types of marine invertebrates, but also note reptiles. Some marine botanical specimens are also depicted. Materials include text based and image field notes. Image medium include photographic prints, negatives, transparencies, and slides. Many of the images depict local inhabitants of Ifaluk Atoll. Localities in which these field notes were created include The Philippines, the Florida Keys, Papua New Guinea, and various African locations (including Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast). Most of the items are related to trips Bayer took in 1953 to Ifaluk [Ifalik] Atoll and Japan, and to Palau and Japan in 1955.
