Description

This collection includes the field books of Jason Richard Swallen, documenting botanical collecting trips in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Honduras, and South Africa. The collection consists of 12 bound volumes of field notes, dating from 1925 to 1954. Field books are numbered by volume (1 through 12) and entries are arranged chronologically. Collector numbers 1 through 11500 are included. The field notes are primarily entries on plants (grasses, and possibly others) collected. Entries list: collector number, scientific name, and brief entry on locality and physical characteristics of the specimen. Sometimes, longer, more narrative field notes describing the landscape and vegetation are included. Occasionally, Swallen lists plants that he observed in an area but didn't collect. Localities in the United States include, but are not limited to: Florida, Texas, California, Colorado, Louisiana, Georgia, Oregon, Utah, Arkansas, and Tennessee.
