Description

This collection consists of the field notes of Lyman B. Smith, from field work conducted mainly in Brazil, but also in Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Wales, Cuba, Barbados, and the United States between the years of 1925 and 1978. Many of the field books are labeled "Herbário Barbosa Rodrigues Itajaí" and Smith probably conducted work at that herbarium while in Brazil. The collection includes journals with descriptive entries on daily activities, lists of specimens collected, observations of plants and vegetation, itineraries, and other miscellaneous notes. Smith's to-do lists are included throughout. Rough sketches of specimens, and hand-drawn maps of collecting localities, can be found in some items. A book of determinations of specimens collected by Reitz and Klein is included, with determinations made by Smith and others. Also includes: a book of cellular cryptogams, possibly kept by Smith; a book on Flora of Brazil, kept by Smith with several other collectors; and a journal of field activities in Brazil (undated) possibly kept by Smith.
