This record describes only the materials within the "Ellsworth Paine Killip Papers, 1914-1950" relating to E. P. Killip's field work. Other materials are described in the Smithsonian Institution finding aid listed under the "Related Materials" section of this record. Items in this collection consist of 53 folders mostly containing determination lists and correspondence regarding specimens collected by approximately 40 collectors including Killip himself. This collection contains materials from 1916-1957, contrary to the dates in the collection title. From 1947 to 1950, Killip served as Head Curator of the Department of Botany, perhaps explaining why so many determination lists for other collectors are in his possession. Killip made most of the determinations himself along with many other Smithsonian botanists. Determinations are mostly for plants collected in South America in countries such as Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Guyana, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Chile. Determinations for plants collected in the United States and Madagascar are also included. See the Related Collection section of this record for a list of collections that with field notes related to these determination lists. Also included in this collection is Killip's 1948 travelogue "Camping in the Adirondacks". This collection also contains some notes (perhaps field notes) and photographs.
