Description

This collection includes field books, maps, and official circulars from Edmund Heller's extensive field work in Africa and South America. Early materials relate to work he completed in the Galapagos Islands [Archipiélago de Colón]. Most of the materials are from his participation in expeditions, and include not only ones led by the Smithsonian, but also Yale University and the National Geographic Society. Expeditions include the Smithsonian Roosevelt African Expedition, 1909-1910; the Smithsonian British East African Expedition, 1910; the Rainey African Expedition, 1911-1912; and the National Geographic Society - Yale University Peruvian Expedition, 1915. The collection also includes a transcribed copy and photocopy of his diary from the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition.
