The field notes within this collection tend to fall into the following categories: notes from New York and the east coast United States; notes from Oregon and the Pacific Northwest; notes taken during the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey or along the Mexican boundary area; notes taken in the Mid and South West including Camp Verde (Arizona), Fort Snelling (Minnesota), Texas, and Circleville (Ohio); notes taken during Mearns's military service in the Philippines; notes taken during the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition; notes taken during the Childs Frick African Expedition; and notes taken by Edgar Mearns's son, Louis di Zerega Mearns.
