Description

This record describes series 3 of series consists of the Ira N. Gabrielson Collection, 1918-1987, Smithsonian Institution Archives Record Unit 007319. This series consists of Gabrielson's diaries, 1918-1977. Entries for 1918-1939 are primarily lists of birds seen and/or collected, with occasional notes on mammals, the landscape, and his activities. Beginning in 1931, the entries are narratives of each day's work with notes on birds and mammals. Many daily descriptions include commentary on gardening and household happenings, parties and meetings attended, and friends and family. In some cases, years overlap and there may be entries for the same day in two different diaries. Gabrielson traveled extensively, and the locations of his bird sightings and collecting vary greatly. Much of the bird notes, however, were taken at or near his home in Oakton, VA.
