Description

Lantern slides and photographs document Arthur de C. Sowerby's work as a naturalist and expedition member, circa 1904 - 1954. Images cover multiple expeditions and hunting trips across China and Asia, as well as images taken for a journal, The China Journal of Science and Arts, Sowerby established after the war while in Shanghai. He edited the journal until the outbreak of World War II in 1941. |Materials document the collecting or observing of mammals, fish, fossils, vegetation, and birds. Subject matter frequently includes images of local inhabitants and vistas of terrain where collecting occurred. When captions are included, he will frequently list the names of participants photographed.|Only a portion of the materials in SIA RU007263 were cataloged. Those that were not cataloged include diaries, journals, publications, and correspondence that did not seem to mention field work, and other non-field documentation.
