Description

Diaries, journals, photographs, scrapbooks, and other materials document William Mann's early entomological collecting trips, as well as the Manns' experiences at the National Zoological Park, and on their travels abroad from 1914-1940. Field notes document the Philip Expedition to the Middle East (1914); Mann's trip as a Sheldon Traveling Fellow to Fiji and Solomon Islands (1915-1916); Smithsonian-Chrysler Expedition to East Africa (1926); their participation in the National Geographic Society-Smithsonian Institution Expedition to the Dutch East Indies (1937); collecting trip to South America (1939); and Smithsonian-Firestone Expedition to Liberia (1940). Materials document travel to Egypt and Palestine in 1914; Tanzania in 1926; Southeast Asia in 1937; as well as Argentina and Brazil in 1939. Most trips have multiple items relating to them, providing multiple formats of information specific events. Photographs of the same location or subject matter exist in multiple places, sometimes with or without detailed captions.
