Biographical History

Kumataro Ito was artist and scientific illustrator from Tokyo, Japan. He studied painting under Gyozan Nakajima and worked as an illustrator of fishes by Tokyo University's Department of Zoology. He was an established illustrator of fishes in Japan when he was selected to be the artist aboard the U.S.S. Albatross during the Philippines Expedition, 1907-1910. During the expedition he worked with Invertebrate Zoologist, Paul Bartsch.
