Biographical History

Benjamin Dann Walsh (1808-1869) was born in Great Britain. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, earning a B.A. and Master's degree, and became a Fellow for 12 years. He had intended on entering the Church, but began to feel strongly against University and Church policies and practices. At the age of 30, he and his wife Rebecca Finn immigrated to the United States, first settling in Cambridge, Illinois, and later Rock Island, Illinois, where he pursued several types of work. He initially took up farming, but later found more success as a lumber dealer. Though his work in entomology started late in life, he eventually became state entomologist of Illinois in 1867. With Charles Valentine Riley, founded the American Entomologist in 1868, a year before his death.
