Osburn, Raymond C.

Biographical History

Raymond Carroll Osburn (1872-1955) received his B.S. (1898) and M.S. (1900) degrees from Ohio State University and his Ph.D. degree in 1906 from Columbia University. In 1898 Osburn was appointed Instructor of Biology and Embryology at Starling Medical College, and from 1899 to 1902 he was Professor of Biology at Fargo College. After studying at Columbia on a fellowship from 1902 to 1903, he taught at the New York High School of Commerce for four years. His other academic appointments included Assistant Professor of Zoology, 1907-1910, and Professor of Biology, 1910-1915, at Barnard College; Professor of Biology, 1915-1917, at Connecticut College for Women; and Professor of Zoology and Entomology and Entomology Department Chairman, 1917-1942, at Ohio State. In addition, he was Associate Director, 1910-1915, of the New York Aquarium; summer Director, 1918-1937, of the Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory of Ohio State; and Research Associate on Bryozoa, 1945-1952, at the Allan Hancock Foundation of the University of Southern California.
