Biographical History

Frederick R. Wulsin was born on July 8, 1891 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned a B.A. at Harvard University (1913). He initially trained to be an engineer, earning a Masters of Civil Engineering, but upon graduation decided to travel. He worked a variety of positions, and eventually took part in several expeditions during the 1920’s across parts of China, Mongolia and Tibet, including the National Geographic Society's Central China Expedition, 1923. Wulsin returned to the United States, earning his Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard (1929). Wulsin discovered an interest in teaching and eventually accepted a position at Tufts University through the University President Leonard Carmichael. He became a lecturer in sociology and anthropology, eventually becoming a professor, and remained until his retirement in 1957. He passed away February 26, 1961. In 1919 he married Janet January Elliott, divorcing in 1929, and later married Susanne Emery.
