Biographical History

Robert Traub (1916-1996) was an entomologist who specialized on fleas. He was born in Manhattan, New York. He received his bachelor's in biology from City College in 1938, and his master's in medical entomology from Cornell in 1939. After serving in the army, he received his PhD in medical entomology from the University of Illinois in 1947. He worked in the rain forests of Asia when he was in the U.S. Army, where he worked to help find ways to keep soldiers from getting diseases caused by insects. He commanded the Army's research lab in Malaysia and retired as a colonel in 1962, after which he went to work at the University of Maryland as professor of medical microbiology. He was named honorary curator of fleas for National Museum of Natural History on his retirement from teaching at Maryland. He died on December 21, 1997.
