Biographical History

Enrique Peìrez Arbelaìez (1896-1972) was born in Medellín, Colombia, in 1896. He studied in Burgos, Spain, and received his doctorate in Munich, Germany, before returning to Colombia to focus on botany and conservation. Peìrez Arbelaìez worked to increase the general public’s understanding of geographical and ecological issues by developing school curricula and writing scientific articles for mainstream journals and magazines. He worked to integrate botany into Colombian society by creating the Jardín Botánico de Bogotá "José Celestino Mutis" and founding the Department of Botany at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He worked with César Uribe Piedrahita to collect plant specimens to establish the National Herbarium. Peìrez Arbelaìez also championed conservation and sustainable development. He created the 'Campaign in the Defence of Natural Resources' to garner public interest in environmental degradation. In his honor, the journal of the Jardín Botánico de Bogotá "José Celestino Mutis" is titled Revista Pérez Arbelaezia.
