Biographical History

Alberto Brenes (1870 - 1948) was a botanist, with an interest in orchids. He was born in San Ramón, Alajuela, Costa Rica. He studied at Horacio Mann College and later the Liceo of Costa Rica where he studied natural sciences, focusing on botany. He was awarded a scholarship in 1890 to study in Europe, and spent a year at the University of Lausanne. He stayed in Europe and spent the next six years studying at the University of Geneva. In 1898 he returned to Costa Rica where he became a botany lecturer in the School of Pharmacy. 1903-1910, Brenes was a professor at the College of San Luis Gonzaga and taught in a variety of natural history disciplines including mineralogy, zoology, and botany. Brenes became head of botany at the National Museum of Costa Rica in 1920 and remained in the position until retiring in 1939. Brenes returned to San Ramón after his retirement.
