Under the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship, established by Virginia Purdy Bacon in order to promote the fauna of regions outside of the United States, Dr. Bartsch conducted faunal studies of certain groups of land and fresh water mollusks of the West Indies. Work was done in the rainy season because this is the season when mollusks are most active and it is easier to conduct fieldwork. During the trips other animals were collected, such as iguanas, turtles and hermit crabs, and given to the National Zoological Park. The expedition was carried out over the course of three field seasons. Destinations include West Indies - Cuba; Puerto Rico, Lesser Antilles, Islands of Margarita, Orchilla and Dutch West Indies; Southern Bahamas, Islands of South coast of Cuba and Caymans.
