The Canal Zone Biological Area (CZBA) in Panama is put under Smithsonian Institution administration by President Harry S. Truman. The tropical research station, located on Barro Colorado Island, had been set aside by the U.S. Congress in 1940. The CZBA is later renamed the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI).
