This is Women’s History Month and the Smithsonian Institution is making History for Women! On March 12, a special edition of Museum Day Live! will feature amazing programs and activities designed to inspire women and girls of color. The dazzling array of opportunities should have something of interest to everyone. From West African dance performance, a teen poetry workshop, or special behind-the-scenes tours of galleries, there are unprecedented opportunities to interact with the museum’s treasures and our outstanding expert staff. Browse this list of activities happening here in Washington D.C. and I am sure you will find something that will spark your interest.
As the First Lady, Michelle Obama, says in her introduction, museums are for everyone. We are deeply devoted to that idea and are striving to make our museums inspiring for everyone. One of the most intriguing events will be The Ladies Lightening Leadership Talks and The Teen Meet and Greet opportunities that will be held in the Smithsonian Castle. Dozens of our outstanding women scientists, curators, archivists, librarians, architects, engineers, and veterinarians, to mention a few, will be discussing what inspired them to pursue their careers. You will have access to information about how you might get involved in working at the Smithsonian or you might find the inspiration that will bring you back to learn more.
If you don’t live in the Washington area but would like to find a museum in your neighborhood that is participating in our nationwide Museum Day Live!, there are over 500 museums across the nation that are opening their doors to you free of charge. You can find a participating museum by searching through this list.
What inspires me every day is the breadth and depth of the talent and passion that makes the Smithsonian Institution such an awesome place to work. With this coming Museum Day Live! special edition, for women and girls of color, we are making history. Come join us and be inspired.
