Greetings from the Smithsonian

The Mall

The landscape of The Mall has changed greatly since construction of the Smithsonian Building was begun on the grounds in 1847. These postcards show The Mall at various times, from when it was hilly and covered with trees, and circular paths, to when the government built "temporary" buildings by the Lincoln Memorial during the wars, to the present day.      mall1x.jpg - 22952 Bytes
